Many Florida homes have a heating system that utilize heat pumps to efficiently maintain comfortable temperatures all year long. But if your heat pump becomes more hassle than helpful, Wentzel’s is here to help! Like any appliance, heat pumps need maintenance and occasional repair. If you notice that yours is no longer doing its job, check for these common problems and call us to fix any problems.
Heat Pumps work both ways. To extract heat from outside to warm your home and to remove heat from your home to cool your home. In Florida we need air conditioning much more than we need heat but we use the same equipment: A heat pump.
Common Problems with Heat Pumps
Not Enough Air Flow
Your heat pump cannot work well if the filter is dirty. Check the filter monthly and change it at least every 3 months. Make sure your outdoor coils are free of obstructions and allows sufficient airflow. A lack of airflow will again increase the time it takes to heat or cool your home. An inefficient heat pump also means higher electricity bill.
Ensure the circuit breaker for the heat pump is not tripped. If it is, trying turning the switch off and back on and then restart your heat pump. If the breaker keeps tripping it is time to call us. Our AC technicians will troubleshoot your unit. If you have a air conditioning maintenance plan you will save money.
If the heat pump is blowing cool air, rather than warm, check the thermostat and circuit breaker. If both of those are fine, a defective air handler could cause cool air flow. This could also be caused by low refrigerant, so be sure to check those levels as well. The defroster can also malfunction, which would allow the outdoor unit to become icy.
Wrong Thermostat Setting
Some issues with a heat pump are not at the pump at all. If the thermostat is not set to heat or has is not one intended to work with heat pumps. An improperly wired thermostat can lead to much larger problems, which could be indicated by the heat pump failing to work.
