Are A/C Units Designed To Handle Hurricane Weather?

A hurricane along a beachHurricane season has been busy this year and although we can’t control the weather we can help you make sure you’re A/C unit is running properly.

Most outdoor units are specifically designed to handle inclement weather and are resistant to things such as rain, wind, heat, cold, etc., however, they are not designed to be immersed in water and they don’t seem to like heavy rains.

The electrical components are sealed and connections are made to block out moisture. The compressor and condenser are made of aluminum, copper, and other metals, and are made to handle regular rain but, rising water and heavy hurricane rain can short out electrical connections, not only creating a problem but a very dangerous one.

If your unit was under water or has been pelted with heavy rain, it is important that you have it inspected and/or cleaned. Even if the unit was operational before being immersed, the water in the component will cause corrosion and/or failure in time.

Not to mention, a hurricane always carries debris and particulates which find their way into your unit and clog coils.

If your unit has been under water, if you see any damage to the refrigerant or electrical line or if there are any signs of smoke, do not attempt to turn on the unit and contact your air conditioning professional to have them inspect the unit.

When you make sure the machine is fine, that it has not been hit, submerges in water, and free from debris; then you can turn it on for a test. If you ever have any doubts about the system turn it off right away and call a professional.

What to do after the storm

  • Make sure you turn your A/C system off as soon as possible. Not only do you have to worry about water in the unit, you must worry about the moisture traveling in the ducks of your home and causing mold growth.
  • Turn off the electrical breaker for your A/C System.
  • Allow the system to completely dry.
  • Have your A/C unit cleaned after the storm by a professional like the ones at Wentzel’s.

What about Before a Storm?

Ideally you should buy a good unit to begin with. If you live within a mile of the ocean your unit can be exposed to salt in the air and can “rust out.” Some manufacturers have a reputation for low quality materials. Make sure you ask your installer about the manufacturer’s durability near salt water.

Make sure there is no debris near the unit that could hit the unit or interfere with the fan. Remove dead branches, trim shrubbery and generally keep your yard clear of anything that could become a projectile.
