At Wentzel’s Heating and Air Conditioning in Sarasota, Florida, we are pleased to pass along energy-saving tips to help you save energy and expense.
Energy Myth: Washing by Hand
Many of us think that washing our dishes the old fashioned way (by hand) saves on energy costs.
However, since we tend to use more hot water than our modern dishwashers do, washing by hand is less energy-efficient than turning on our dishwasher.
Dishwasher Energy Tips
- Skip a pre-rinse of dishes. (According to Consumer Reports, pre-rinsing wastes up to 20 gallons of water per wash without making your dishes any cleaner.)
- Skip the “rinse hold” on your dishwasher as well, for the same reason.
- Wait until you have a full load of dishes before running your dishwasher, but don’t overload!
- Use the control on your dishwasher that turns off heat during the drying cycle.
- Or open the dishwasher door after the rinse cycle to let the dishes air dry.
