Foods that Cool You Down

Foods to Cool Your Temperature - RadishesDid you know that certain foods can make you feel cooler? What you’re eating and drinking can have a direct impact on your body temperature.

So, if you’re feeling hot after a day at Siesta Beach or after a jog in a Sarasota park, you may want to eat some cooling foods before you turn up your air conditioner.

First and foremost, drink lots of fluids. Then eat cooling foods to help hydrate your muscles and skin, and maintain a healthy internal body temperature.

Foods Rich in Water

Not only does drinking water keep your body cool and hydrated, so does eating foods with high water content, such as fresh fruits and raw vegetables. Examples include apples, melon, watermelon, mango, cucumbers, tomatoes, celery, iceberg lettuce, radishes. As these fruits and vegetables hydrate the cells in your body, your body temperature will cool down, and you may not need to turn on your air conditioning.

Leafy Veggies & Whole Grains – Calcium & Magnesium

Leafy green vegetables are rich in calcium, and calcium helps to regulate your internal body temperature.

Most whole grains are rich in magnesium, which not only are capable of relaxing muscles and nerve cells, they can also increase the consumption of calcium in the your bloodstream, which helps your body maintain a more regular body temperature.

Hot Spices

Believe it or not, “hot foods” can help keep you cool. Consider popular recipes in countries with hot climates, and you’ll find that many are full of spices and heat.

Spices increase your body temperature, as well as your pulse and sweat. This actually makes you feel cooler by decreasing the difference between your body and your surrounding air temperature.

Fresh Mint

Fresh mint often works well as a cooling aid because it triggers the cold-sensitive nerves in your mouth. Fresh mint can make the perfect accompaniment to fresh fruits and vegetables.

Beans & Chickpeas instead of Meat

Beans and chickpeas are a good alternative to meat when you’re feeling hot. The protein in beans and chickpeas is easier to digest and won’t increase your body temperature as much as meat will.

At Wentzels’ Heating & Air Conditioning, we’re pleased to bring you heating and cooling tips from Sarasota, Florida.
