Florida Seasons and How They Affect Your Heating and Cooling System

Siesta Key Sign at BeachEven though it is mostly sunny in Sarasota Florida, we do have seasons. Most of Florida is a humid subtropical climate, but South Florida has a tropical savanna climate. It is important to understand the differences in each season and how they affect your A/C unit, heating unit, and your wallet.

Not all seasons are created equal when it comes to maintaining a healthy A/C and heating system. For example, if you live on the Sarasota Florida waterfront or on Siesta Key, the climate significantly impacts your unit. You will need a heat pump that is designed to withstand salty air. You’ll see that a high quality heat pump will last longer, giving you years of service without problems. And, right-sized equipment is more efficient by design. Never, never, never accept a contract for an “over sized” heat pump. It will cost you for years.

Early Spring, is one of the best seasons in Sarasota Florida right behind the beloved summertime. Spring in Florida starts around mid-March. This is the prime time to open your windows and let the fresh air in. As we all know, springtime brings guests and tourist to our sunshine state. This is also a great time to have your A/C system maintenance to avoid any issues that might arise before the hot-humid summer months arrive. At Wentzel’s, we offer maintenance agreements at the best possible pricing available.

Benefits of having an air conditioning maintenance plan:

  • Semi-annual inspection
  • 10% discount on service parts
  • Competitive rate on labor for repairs
  • Better indoor air quality
  • Equipment runs more efficiently saving you money
  • Catch problems early preventing major problems
  • Avoid surprises – emergency repairs are less likely to be needed

Summer, as you can imagine gets very hot and humid! Summer starts around May. The temperature starts to rise to an average, 80 degrees to 90 degrees or more. This is the ideal time to turn on your A/C unit. Florida native plants and grass start to grow like crazy and we can’t forget our typical afternoon rain shower. Due to our daily rain showers and plant growth, our grass needs to be cut every 5 days or so. Be cautions of blowing debris into or around your A/C unit. This can cause serious damage to your unit. If you have a maintenance plan with Wentzel’s one of our professionals will have already serviced your A/C unit:

  • Checked the indoor and outdoor coils
  • Checked the operating pressures
  • Checked the safety controls
  • Checked and replaced 1 standard filter
  • Checked and adjusted the blower components
  • Checked for correct air flow
  • Cleaned condensate pan
  • Checked all electrical connections
  • Checked voltage and amperage on motors
  • Lubricated all moving parts
  • Checked thermostat calibration

Fall, normally starts around mid-October. After a hot humid summer, we all look forward to the cooler temperatures and lower humidity levels that Fall brings. At Wentzel’s, we provide you with a qualified service technician to inspect and service your air conditioning and heating equipment twice a year to keep it running smoothly. Ideally, Fall is a good time to have maintenance performed on your heating and cooling systems, especially heading into the winter months.

Winter is a surprise in Florida. We have seen winters where the overnight temps never dip below 55 and we have seen winters that got so cold, we have had pipes freeze and burst. Even though winters in Florida are fairly mild, it is important to remember that occasionally the weather can dip low enough that you will need your heating system to be operating properly and efficiently. This is especially true for single family homes, condominiums and apartment buildings that do not have the benefit of shared walls. Heat pumps work differently in the winter than they do in the summer. That is why it is important to have your unit inspected in the fall.

In conclusion, not all products are created equal- and that’s extremely important depending on your location. You can count on our experienced staff to recommend the best products and maintenance for your specific location and situation.
