The Three Parts You Can See From Your Yard

The outdoor unit is the part everyone recognizes, and it does three jobs in sequence.

Compressor

The compressor pulls in refrigerant vapor, compresses it, and raises its temperature and pressure before sending it on to the condenser coil.

Condenser Coil

The condenser coil removes heat from that pressurized refrigerant and sends it through the fan.

Fan

The fan expels the heat pulled from the refrigerant out into the outdoor air, which is why the air blowing off the outdoor unit always feels warm, even in the middle of summer.

What’s Hidden Behind the Walls

Once the refrigerant has given up its heat outside, it comes back into the house to do the opposite job, and that part of the system is mostly out of sight.

Refrigerant-Filled Tubing

Refrigerant-filled tubing circulates refrigerant between the indoor and outdoor units, carrying it back and forth through the whole cycle.

Evaporator Coil

The evaporator coil uses that refrigerant to absorb heat from the air the blower pushes across it, which is the actual cooling step in the whole process.

Air Handling Unit

The air handling unit conditions and circulates the air once it’s been cooled.

Blower

The blower pulls warm air from the home into the return duct and across the evaporator coil.

Ducting

Ducting carries the cooled air through the house and brings warm air back through the system to start the cycle again.

Return Air Vent

The return air vent is where warm air inside the home gets pulled in by the blower. These can sit near the ceiling or along the baseboard, and either way, it matters that they aren’t blocked by furniture or curtains.

Filter

The filter is typically located in the return air duct or the blower itself. It’s a porous material that catches solid particles out of the air before they reach the evaporator coil, and it should be replaced roughly every 3 months in an average household, more often in a home with pets or with someone who has severe allergies.

Air Supply Vents

Air supply vents are where the cooled air actually flows into the room. They can be in the ceiling, the wall, or the floor, and keeping them clear matters just as much as keeping the return vents clear.
