Old School Cooling Tips for Your Florida Home

One hundred years ago homeowners in Sarasota and Bradenton didn’t have air conditioning, and yet they survived our hot and humid summer months. The secret to their success was smart home design.

Those big wrap-around porches were for more than relaxing with a glass of iced tea. The big overhang kept the glaring sun from streaming indoors. You can replicate the effect with well-placed awnings.

The magnificent oak trees planted on the south and west sides were perfect to hang a swing from, but they also shaded the roof and walls of the house. Keep curtains and blinds closed during the day to shade your windows.

Windows were placed strategically, even in the attic, to cross-ventilate. In your modern home, keep doors closed to rooms not in use so the cooled air flows only through the parts of the house in use. Attic fans blow heat out of the attic through vents.

The house was painted white or yellow to reflect the sun’s heat. Light colored exteriors, including the roof, will help reflect the sun rather than absorb heat.

One thing early Florida residents didn’t have to worry about was internal heat generated by electronics and appliances. Turn off appliances and computers when not in use. It makes sense to cook outdoors on a grill, or use the microwave or crock pot rather than an oven.
